Ruakuri Cave was first opened to the public in 1904 by land owner James Holden. However, two years later the New Zealand government took ownership of the cave (not the land above) and ran tours of the cave till 1988. Holden's grandson also called James, then challenged the government's right to run tours of the cave below his land by placing a no-trespass notice in the cave. The end result was a legal descision that gave land owners in New Zealand the right over leases and royalties for any caves below their land. It took around a decade of negotiatons to reopen the cave in 2005 to the public. James Holden (the grandson) not only won the right to royalties, but received compensation for lost revenue over the years.
