About Koru

The koru is a spiral shape linked to the unfurling of a young fern frond. The frond is curled over at the tip of the frond and unravels to becomes a straightened fern leaf. To the Maori, the koru represents creation or the unfolding of new life, similar to a feotus. The spiral shape is a dominate shape in both Maori bone and wood carving as well as Maori tattoo design.

The Koru is used in many New Zealand company logos with the most notable being Air New Zealand.
