About Wellington Inner-City

The inner city suburbs of Wellington are also the oldest suburbs in Wellington. Their proximity to the city centre make them desirable places to live. Many homes here have views of the Wellington Harbour and CBD.

Wellington's inner city suburbs (Lambton Ward) include: Aro Valley, Brooklyn, Highbury, Kelburn, Mount Victoria, Oriental Bay, Pipitea, Te Aro, Thorndon, and Wadestown.

Aro Valley lies between the hills of Brooklyn and Kelburn, near Victoria and Massey universities. It’s known for its quirky alternative lifestyle and artistic community. The suburb lies deep within a forested valley with small wooden cottages. There are a number of bush walks in the area and it is hard to believe that you can be deep inside a rainforest with the CBD a mere 15 minutes walk away.

Oriental Bay is famous for its beautiful beach and cafes. Houses here are some of the most expensive in the country. Thorndon is a historic suburb containing early style two storey wooden homes with some turned into restaurants and cafes. The beautiful Wellington Botanic Gardens are located here.

Suburbs like Wadestown and Brooklyn sit further away from the CBD and are perched high in the surrounding hills offering some great vantage points of the city and harbour.
