ReStart is a shopping complex on the fringe of the Christchurch CBD. It was the first part of the city centre to open to the public after the devastating earthquakes in 2010 and 2011 where 80% of the buildings were destroyed or suffered serious damage.
The mall is constructed from brightly coloured steel boxes, aka decorated shipping containers. This helped the mall to rise up quickly which was an important strategy in keeping the CBD alive while demolition and reconstruction work takes place. Shipping containers are robust making them ideal structures for earthquake prone areas. Even during construction of the mall, aftershocks were taking place on a regular basis.
The Re:Start Mall has brought a slice of normality and vitality back to the city's CBD and shows the resilience of the citizens of Christchurch.
