About Karekare Beach

Karekare Beach is one of the gems of Auckland's west coast. It is both a coastal community and beach. The coast is characterised as having strong currents, huge waves, black iron (volcanic) sand, and cliffs. Just inland from the beach is a tract of temperate rainforest with a scenic waterfall. Nestled among the bushclad hills are homes that blend into the scenic landscape.

The Auckland Council provides and manages information signs and walks as well as public restrooms near the main car park behind the beach. The beach and hills form part of the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park. It is located between Piha and Whatipu on Auckland's wild west coast about a 50 minute drive from downtown Auckland. Karekare Beach featured in Jane Campion's Oscar Winning movie 'The Piano'.
