About The East Coast

The East Coast is the term used for the coastline on the eastern side of the North Island and within the Gisborne region. The area is famous for its warm sunny climate and beautiful swimming and surfing beaches. Even the city of Gisborne has its share of great beaches like Wainui Beach and Waikanae Beach.

Outside the city limits of Gisborne are many coastal gems in the form of small bays and wide sweeping beaches. The latter includes notable beaches like Tokomaru Bay and Tolaga Bay. These beaches are linked by the Pacific Coast Highway, a popular tourist road and an essential North Island highway.

Many coastal settlement here are rich in Maori culture. You are never far from carved meeting houses and their local communities that have a strong affinity with the ever present ocean. The movie Whale Rider for example was filmed in this region.
