About Kuranda

Railway Station photoKuranda is a small community 400m above sea level and about 25 kms from Cairns. The town is surrounded by tropical rainforest and is the destination village for Kuranda Skyrail and the Kuranda Travel Train. It has a vibrant arts and crafts community, as well as butterfly and bird sanctuaries.

The Kuranda Scenic Railway is undoubtedly one of the world's great day trip adventures, and is an essential experience for any visitor to Cairns. You'll travel the 90 minute journey from Cairns in classic timber carriages. The trip passes through lush tropical rainforest and includes a climb of more than 300 metres up the Barron River valley which encompasses a deep river gorge and some spectacular waterfalls. A highlight of the trip is a close up view of Stoney Creek Falls on your left with Barron Falls further up on the right.
