About Gold Coast Meter Maid

In 1965, the Surfers Paradise Meter Maids were introduced to help beat the negative feelings toward parking meters that were introduced. These ladies spent their day strolling the streets and putting coins into expired parking meters to save people from receiving a fine. However, the Gold Coast City Council installed new parking machines that dispensed vouchers leaving 'meter maids' without this task. So they were reinvented and today they promote the Gold Coast and its tourist attractions. They are even sun smart these days with the addition of an Akubra hat to the uniform. But the trademark bikini or skimpy outfit has remained.
