About Cape Tribulation

Cape Tribulation is the only place on Earth where two World Heritage areas meet. It is the location of the world's oldest rainforest (the Daintree) and the famous Great Barrier Reef.

Cape Tribulation was aptly named by Captain Cook when he became the first European to discover the Great Barrier Reef . In 1770 his ship, the Endeavour, ran aground on the reef. The ship was parked at the Cape for repairs which took nearly 2 months.

More recently in the 1970's 'The Cape' was home to a number of hippie settlements within the rainforest, but construction of a sealed road opened the area up to tourism.

The Cape is Australia's most biologically diverse area because the Great Barrier Reef is the world'srichest marine environment and the Daintree Rainforest is Australia's richest terrestial eco-system with a huge variety of plants, birds, reptiles, and amphibians.
