Information

The Wellington Cable Car transports passengers between Lambton Quay, (the main retail street in Wellington) to the suburb of Kelburn, (which sits above the CBD). The route goes under the state highway 1, and through a number of tunnels, past Victoria University and Kelburn Park, and ends at the highest point of the Botanic Gardens. The Cable Car is a tourist attraction and a Wellington symbol.

The Cable Car was originally constructed at the end of the 19th century to move people up the to a new residential development called Kelburn. The location of Victoria University was influenced by the cable car to enable students to also travel between the CBD and the university.
