About Temperate Rainforest

Much of New Zealand's native bush is comprised of temperate rainforest. These forests dominate the lowland areas of both islands. Beech is also common and usually found at higher altitudes or colder areas at low altitude.

Fern trees are prolific in the rainforest. There are about 85 different species. The Silver Fern otherwise known as the Ponga tree is one of New Zealand's national symbols. The Black Tree Fern has the honour of being the highest tree fern in the world, reaching heights of 20 metres or more.
