The 2016 Kaikoura earthquake measured 7.8 and lasted two minutes. It struck just after midnight on 14 November 2016 NZDT at a depth of around 15 kilometres (9 mi). Multiple ruptures occurred in what is described as one of the world's most complex earthquake events.
