About Waitakere Ranges

The Waitakere Ranges are located on the doorstep of Auckland city. The area encompasses hilly terrain covered in native forest with some Auckland suburbs and coastal settlements on the boundary. The highest point in these ranges is 474 m (1555 ft) which by New Zealand standards is not a high range. The area is protected under the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park which is administered by the Auckland Council.

Within the park are a number of short walks as well as longer treks that take you through rainforested terrain, waterfalls, along beaches, and to rocky outcrops and cliffs as high as 300 m (984 ft).

There are a number of notable coastal suburbs located on the boundary of the park such as Piha, Karekare, and Bethells Beach. The park is also a popular location for shooting movies and film. The television series Hercules and Xena Warrior Princess were both filmed here. Oscar winning movie, 'The Piano' was shot at Bethells Beach.
