While the western side
of the Southern Alps is clothed in lush Beech and rain forests while the eastern
side is covered in tussock grasses. The prevailing westerly wind forces the
clouds up to higher altitudes as it tries to cross the Southern Alps. Eventually
the clouds ascend so high that they are forced to precipitate in the form
of snow or rain on the western side. Some parts of the Westcoast receive up
to 7 metres of rain per year, while the eastern side receives a meagre 400mm.
200mm or less is classified as desert.
