Much of New Zealand's native bush comprises of temperate rainforest. These forests dominate the lowland areas of the both islands. Fern trees are prolific in the rainforest, there are about 85 different species. The Silver Fern or otherwise known as the Ponga tree is one of New Zealand's national symbols and the Black Tree Fern is the highest in the world, reaching heights of 20 metres or more.
