About Eastbourne Wellington

Eastbourne is a coastal suburb of Lower Hutt. Located in the Wellington Region, on the opposite coast to Wellington city's waterfront, it can be reached by a ferry service that runs between Queen's Wharf in downtown Wellington and Days Bay Wharf in Eastbourne. The road to Eastbourne from Wellington is quite long as the it encircles a good portion of Wellington Harbour.

Eastbourne consists as a collection of bays with pockets of housing. Starting at Point Howard, the bays order as follows: Sorrento Bay, Lowry Bay, York Bay, Mahina Bay, Sunshine Bay, Days Bay, Rona Bay, and Robinson Bay.

Besides access to the coast, the area is positioned to get good afternoon sun. Hills that frame these bays ascend steeply into native bush with expensive homes occupying the lower portions of the hills, often surrounded by this native bush. Many of these homes also have spectacular views of the harbour with Wellington city in the background. A number of scenic bush walks exist here that take you through pristine temperate rainforest with streams heading down to the coast. Views of the harbour get better on these walks as you head higher up the hills.. Some walks take you to the Lower Hutt suburb of Wainuiomata.

The main centre of Eastbourne has a small retail centre including a number of quality cafes and restaurants, as well as an art gallery.

Burdan's gate located at the end of the Eastbourne road leads to a dirt road that is closed to public traffic. A popular walk or bike ride along this road to Pencarrow Heads gives you great views of Wellington Harbour with a steep backdrop. The walk takes a few hours and leads to three lighthouses near the south coast of the North Island. You can also walk around the south coast till you get to the Wainuiomata coast.
