    Miramar Peninsula

photoWellington has one of the worlds great harbours and is actually a volcanic crater that has been flooded by the nearby sea. The harbour is busy with boats, yachts, and windsurfers and has some great beaches. In the summer months many Wellingtonians swim at beaches like Oriental Bay Beach and Scorching Bay. Other parts of the coastline are great for diving or windsurfing.

Wellingtons suburbs extend up and over the hills that surround the harbour, so many houses afford great views over the water. On the harbours edge are some memorable cafes and restaurants like the Chocolate Fish Cafe and the Tugboat restaurant. The East-West ferry connects downtown Wellington with the beautiful suburb of Days Bay and passes Somes Island on route. Days Bay is a great place for a coffee followed by swim at the beach.

photoWellington harbour originally had two entrances, the present one and a channel where Kilbirnie now lies. Miramar peninsula was once also an island but an earthquake in 1460 linked Miramar island with the mainland. Further uplift during the major earthquake of 1855 brought Matiu/Somes higher above sea level so that much of the present shore line is surrounded by cliffs. Lambton Quay the main shopping street in Wellington was once also part of the coastline.
