This tract of rainforest is located on Fraser Island, which is the worlds largest sand island. This is quite unique when you consider that sand cannot retain water, yet there are not only rainforests here, but also many fresh water lakes and streams. This miracle is explained by the slow build up of dead plants, which create a layer of material over the sand and slows the water from seeping into the ground. This also explains why sometimes the river levels can be low during a flood, and high during a drought. It actually takes many years for the water to seep in to the underground river system, which is the starting place for many of the rivers here. Todays river levels are telling of the rainfall that fell decades ago.
Fraser Island was designated World Heritage status
by the United Nations. Other World Heritage areas in Australia include The
Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest.
